Salicylic Acid: A Guide Into The Skin Care Essential
Salicylic acid. Most of us are quite familiar with this name as an important skincare ingredient, but what precisely is Salicylic acid, and how does it function for our skin?
The Structure:
At its core, salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), derived from the nutrient-rich willow bark. Being a BHA, salicylic acid is an oil-soluble compound capable of penetrating deep into the pores, effectively dissolving oil, dust particles and dead skin cells. This action equally helps to unclog pores and prevent acne formation.
2. Exfoliation:
Remarkably, salicylic acid has the ability to exfoliate the skin gently yet effectively. It works by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to gradually shed in a natural cycle. This action not only prevents pore blockages, but also promotes a smoother and brighter complexion. Regular use of this compound can significantly reduce the appearance of white heads, black heads, and blemishes. However, salicylic acid is to be used with precise caution.
3. Precautions and Use.
Salicylic acid although good for oily skin, should be used in moderation by dry or sensitive skin types; preferably with a concentration of 0.5%, to avoid over-exfoliation and skin irritation if to be used daily.
Oily skin types not excluded from rules, should begin use at lower concentrations and progressively incorporate higher percentages with 2% being their daily rightful amount for treatment.
Concentrations of 2% should be used by the former 2-3 times daily, applied at nighttime.
